End of Volume 1!

Wow… 126 pages drawn over… years (I can’t remember how many… at least 3). I’m so glad to have completed this project. It’s always been a personal goal of mine to complete a manga book and with this final page, I can finally say I have accomplished this task. 🙂

But with that news, I must also announce that White Angel will be on haitus for the foreseeable future. I want to change up projects and start a new writing one. I may return to this story in the future, but I am thinking about writing it as a book series or single-novel instead. What do you think? Would you read it if I changed the format?

Drawing this comic taught me a lot of lessons. I might do a blog post in a few weeks about that, in case the info is of any use to other comic aspirers out there.

Thanks for reading!

100 Pages!

Wow! I made 100 pages! Needless to say, this is a huge personal accomplishment, having stuck with this project long enough to have 100 whole pages drawn for it. I’m only a few pages away from finishing volume 1 (20-30 or so). Perhaps then I will have a post mortem to share since I do feel like tackling on this first webcomic of mine did comes with a lot of lessons learned.

Not that we’re in June, I thought I’d update the blog part of this webcomic to just give an update on daily life.

I did end up going to Fanime, though I didn’t have a table in the Artist Alley. And I probably only spent a total amount of time in Fanime of… 1 hour, mostly just checking in with my friends who did have a table (oh, one of them also started her own webcomic over on tapastic too! Do check it out: Red Reminiscence ). Clockwork Alchemy, the steampunk convention, had my attention instead. I liked the refined style, and the smaller, quieter atmosphere of the con instead (I think it says something when “remember to shower” does not need to be on the registration form of a convention). Plus, I’ve been reading Jim Butcher’s new steampunk book, The Cinder Spires: The Aeronaut’s Windlass , which really got me in the mood for the con. I even dressed up! Not as elaborate as some of the victorian aristocrat gowns I saw there, but this is probably as far as I’ll go for cosplay. I mean, I found that faux corset to be a pain to wear already. I can’t imagine the full get-up, with the bustle and a real full-torso corset on top!

You know what’s another factor that makes steampunk cons worthwhile. Male cosplay. Guys look good when they try (just like girls, those girls tend to try on a normal basis). And when guys try to look aristocratic and stately, it looks good.

It’s one of the cool things about steampunk fashion. Your body type, etc really doesn’t matter b/c the clothing and fashion is all based on high quality layers and details. If you wear good quality items (that fit, mind you!), take the time to shave, or do up your hair, or etc, you look great!

February Update

75 pages! Yes!

Another 2 months have past and the pages are chugging along slowly, but at a regular pace. They’re getting faster to draw, making my constant struggle with a buffer less difficult. Of course, that’s only when I don’t have massive backgrounds to draw. Those are less common now.

I’ve learned some tricks to help me through. 3D models for reference work, Manga Studio’s mannequins (though I use these less), and then just a repetitive process make the pages easier to crunch though. it’s almost relaxing in its routine.

So Fanime, the big anime convention of the SF Bay Area, is coming up in a few months. I’m debating going, since I’m really not a fan of giant crowds and my past experiences in their artist alley were… exhausting. >.< But… I didn’t have a webcomic back then. What do you think? A friend of mine got a table to sell. While I can’t legally sell at a convention, she did say that in exchange for helping I could do some free self-promotion at her table.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Happy Holidays to my readers! Thank you for sticking with me this last year as I learned the ways of drawing comic pages. 🙂

Regardless of where you are, what your culture is, or who you spend these holidays with, now is a time of celebration and remembering the joys of your life. 2015 has had its ups and downs, but I look to the ups with fond memories of adventures and exploration and big life changes (biggest probably being to sell all my furniture and move back down to SF Bay Area with just the items in my car).

Looking forward to 2016 and more stories to read (and write)!

Page 51-55 are up!

So sorry for the lack of updates lately, but I’m happy to say that I have been drawing in this time, just not updating this site as regularly as I should have. But to make up for it, I’ve uploaded a whole batch of pages to share! How are you liking it so far? Good story? Needs better pacing? Can’t tell yet b/c it’s too soon in the plot?

In the meantime, as an update on life I just came back from a vacation trip to Scotland where I wandered around the midgies-infested highlands and heard great tales about the Jacobites and the Highlanders of Scotland and then returned to Edinburgh where I heard the same stories but from the winning side. I’m thinking about re-launching my old website tingchen.net (which currently just points to my tumblr b/c I had trouble maintaining so many media channels). I want to share my  travel stories, but nothing I have right now really works for that.  I also, in the past months, watched the weddings of 2 good friends, ate lots of food, got in to archery, and hey! I hit page 50! Pretty awesome. 🙂

I should also mention my birthday is coming up and I think these age milestones are considered a big deal? Ah… I try not to think on it too much. ^^” Keep living life like an adventure. As much as you can anyways.

Daily Doodles

In order to practice and better learn iconic design and art style (in comics, cartooning, iconography, etc etc), I decided to start a 365-day Daily Doodle Challenge for myself, happily inspired by my friend, Anne Tai, who did the same thing all of last year.

The rule is simple: Every day, I draw 1 piece of fan art. Sometimes it will be nicely done on an artist trading card, other times it could be a quick scribble on a post it. It all depends on my schedule….

If you’re interested in seeing the posts thus far (I have at least 1 week’s worth so far), take a look at my Instagram or Tumblr pages… I’ll be sharing these daily images there.

Chapter 2 has started!

I just mass-updated 3-4 pages to start off Chapter 2. Sorry for the delay, but great news! I’m all moved in and got a new job! 🙂 I start tomorrow at a new startup in the SF Bay Area and am excited for work. I really have no idea what to expect, so I hope the team is good and that we will do great things together. And that I will have a normal work schedule/routine so that I can draw pages more regularly. ^^”

But on that note, now that I’ve finally moved in to my new place, got a new desk, and settled in to my space (with furniture that I picked for style (as opposed to just “what’s cheap?” ah the college days… :3)), I should have more time to just sit and draw. It’s kind of weird doing that again! Who knew?

Meanwhile, a couple of friends of mine and I just started a “Drawing Meats” artist group. We’re… still figuring out the motto and etc… but we have business cards now (lol). Anyways… check it out if you are free: www.DrawingMeats.com

Temporary Haitus until Feb 10

I hate to do this to you, but I need to take a temporary haitus from drawing White Angel.

After the holidays ran my buffer dry, I am now in the process of moving to the SF Bay Area (I’m coming back home wheee!). Packing up my stuff and driving long distances means I have no means of drawing or publishing new pages online until I am settled in my new apartment.

Everything should be back to normal by February 10 with new pages on the way then.

Please hang on with me. And thanks for continuing to read this comic. 🙂

Site Under Construction

Forgive the mess, I’m updating the site a bit. This site uses WordPress and unfortunately, there’s no easy way to update tidbits of it without publishing work-in-progress elements live during the process. But… I should have everything up and running by January 2015 (end of the winter holiday).

In the mean time, if you are eager to know the next update(s) or read the comic, I suggest catching up on White Angel on Tapastic. You can subscribe there too and be kept up to date with the latest releases and etc. 🙂

Thanks for reading and see you again in the coming weeks!
